Posted by betwixtmarketing on December 5, 2007

Below you will find a relevant and informative beginners guide to the much discussed area of search engine optimisation, widely referred to as SEO.

Definition(s)
SEO is the process of improving the volume and quality of traffic to a web site from search engines via “natural” (“organic” or “algorithmic”) search results.

SEO is the active practice of optimising a web site by improving internal and external aspects in order to increase the traffic the site receives from search engines.

Optimising a web site for search engines can require looking at many unique elements:

  • Discovery and analysis of the terms and phrases that will generate traffic
  • Keyword analysis
  • Developing a search engine friendly website
  • Building (incoming) links
  • Marketing unique value(s) of the website

Google, Yahoo! & MSN
The majority of web traffic is driven by the three major commercial search engines – Google, Yahoo! & MSN. If your website cannot be found by search engines or your content cannot be put into their databases, you miss out on the massive opportunities available to websites provided via search.

Quick FACTS

  • Nearly 90% of people find websites through Search Engines.
  • Search Engines drive more than half of online purchases.
